September 20th, 2003 – John Wolyniec's golazo vs. Columbus
John Wolyniec scored one of the more memorable goals in MLS history on September 20, 2003 at the old Giants Stadium against the Columbus Crew.
After the teams played to a 0-0 draw through 90 minutes, Wolyniec broke the tie with a game-winning wonder strike in the 99th minute. Amado Guevara sent a free kick towards the Columbus goal from midfield and Wolyniec connected with a left-footed volley out of the air that beat Jon Busch to the top right corner.
Wolyniec, now currently on the New York staff as the reserve team head coach and player development coordinator, played in 142 games (79 starts) for New York over three separate stints with the club, scoring 26 goals and recording 14 assists.
Wolyniec is the only player in franchise history to score in an MLS Cup Final, scoring New York’s lone goal in a 3-1 loss in 2008 against the Columbus Crew.
