MLS Weather Protocols

According to Major League Soccer policy, any lightning strike withing eight (8) miles of Red Bull Arena must result in a match delay, in accordance with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s recommendations.

Once a strike happens within the eight-mile radius, a mandatory 30-minute countdown begins where fans must seek shelter out of their seats. For every new strike, the countdown clock would reset to 30 minutes.

If there are no observed thunder or lightning strikes within the 30 minutes, fans can return to their seats. Once the lightning had cleared and the waiting period expired, teams will be able to participate in a short warmup session before resuming the match.

Other weather-related delays or postponements may occur, including extreme heat or high wind speeds. High temperatures, humidity, solar radiation or wind speeds in excess of 60 MPH can all lead to delays or postponements to best protect players, staff and fans, per MLS policy.

In the event of a match postponement, the club will communicate next steps to ticket holders.
