The New York Red Bulls will face the New York Cosmos (NASL) in the fourth round of the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on June 14 at of Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, Long Island at 8:30 PM. New York’s opponent was decided following the Cosmos’ 2-0 victory over the Brooklyn Italians (NPSL) earlier tonight at Belson Stadium at St. John’s University.
FIFTH ROUND POTENTIAL PAIRINGS ANNOUCED
The New York Cosmos entered the U.S. Open Cup competition in the third round. Last year, the Cosmos joined the NASL and won the Fall Season Championship after recording a 9-1-4 record. The Cosmos defeated the Atlanta Silverbacks, 1-0, in Soccer Bowl 2013 and are coached by former New York forward Giovanni Savarese.
The Red Bulls have never faced the Cosmos.
The Red Bulls will compete in the single-elimination, national tournament for the 18th time. Last year, the Red Bulls defeated PDL side, Reading United AC, 2-0, at Red Bull Arena before falling to the New England Revolution on June 12, 4-2 at Harvard University’s Soldier’s Field Soccer Stadium in the fourth round. New York’s best finish in the tournament was in 2003, making it to the final before falling to the Chicago Fire, 1-0. The Red Bulls are 20-17 all-time in the competition and, in addition to their 2003 finals run, have made the final four three other times.
Home teams were determined by a random selection process among those clubs that have applied to host and whose venues meet the minimum tournament requirements.
